Reading a free game before it reads your patience
Most mobile strategy games are free to download, and that always comes with a cost somewhere. The honest ones sell cosmetics or a one-time unlock. The rest build the whole game around waiting you into frustration.
The warning sign I watch for is artificial slowdown. If a game suddenly demands a huge wait between levels right as it gets fun, the design is manufacturing impatience, not challenge.
Energy systems are the classic example. A fair one lets you play a decent session before it kicks in. A greedy one caps you after two levels and dangles a fix in front of you every time.
None of this means free games are bad. Plenty are generous and complete. The trick is finishing a few sessions before deciding, since the real monetisation usually hides past the pleasant first hour.
